Bullying hurts. And it can happen anywhere – on the bus, going to school or even over your mobile or computer.

There's loads of different types of bullying including name-calling, being teased, being pushed or pulled around, having your bag taken and thrown around, being forced to hand over money or possessions, having rumours spread about you or being ignored or left out.

It may be about the colour of your skin, a disability or your sexuality – but whatever the reason - it's not on and there's plenty of support out there to help you deal with all kinds of bullying.

It might be happening to you or someone you know. It's hard to stand up to bullies who enjoy making your life a misery. But bullies must not think they can get away with it.

Here are some tips to help you if you or someone you know is being bullied:

Don't ignore it. It won't go away on its own and it could get worse.

Tell someone you trust – that could be a friend, teacher or parent – and remember that it's not your fault. No-one deserves to be bullied.

Try and keep a record of when it happens – it might be helpful to save any nasty texts or emails you're sent.

If you can, try to stay away from the bullies and ask your mates to look out for you. Don't be horrible back – you don't want to get yourself in to trouble too.

And try to act more confidently – even if you don't feel it.

If someone you know is being bullied refuse to join in – think how you'd feel if it was you. Stick around and speak to the victim afterwards – tell them the bully is the one with the problem.

Encourage them to tell an adult or someone they trust.
